Endorsements

Miriam Wyzenbeek, Professional Officer, Psychology Council

The Council frequently receives notifications about psychologists misusing protected titles, for example, referring to themselves as a Clinical, Forensic, Clinical Neuropsychologist or Organisational Psychologist, when they have not been endorsed as such. Under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (NSW) a practitioner must formally apply for endorsement to use a protected title. They are unable to use a title that may mislead the public into believing that they do hold endorsement in an approved area of practice when they do not.

Only a psychologist with general registration and an approved area of practice may use a title that indicates they have an endorsement. The nine areas of practice approved for endorsement include:

  • Clinical Neuropsychologist
  • Clinical Psychologist
  • Community Psychologist
  • Counselling Psychologist
  • Educational and Developmental Psychologist
  • Forensic Psychologist
  • Health Psychologist
  • Organisational Psychologist
  • Sport and Exercise Psychologist.

Endorsement is not based on professional experience and is not automatically granted based on academic qualifications. Please refer to the Psychology Board of Australia’s website for details about the eligibility requirements and application process.
